On December 20th, Professor Wang Yan, Director of Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital Xiamen University (hereinafter referred to as “XMCH”), was invited to attend the annual meeting of Thanh Hoa Province General Hospital in Vietnam online. Director Wang Yan's speech, titled "Advances in Transcatheter Heart Valve Intervention in XMCH", covered six complex cases of valve intervention therapy recently performed at XMCH. The cases involved valve repair/replacement and robot-assisted interventional therapies, showcasing innovative technologies and the exceptional expertise of Chinese specialists. He also vividly demonstrated the outstanding performance of domestically produced innovative devices in the field of complex valve interventional therapy. During the Q&A session, Vietnamese experts praised the hospital’s treatment of complex cases and the international innovative techniques, expressing a desire to further strengthen future exchanges and cooperation between the two sides.

This academic exchange originated from Nguyen Tuan Viet, a young cardiovascular specialist from Thanh Hoa Province General Hospital, who had previously participated in the Heart Sapling Visiting Scholar Program. In September 2023, Dr. Viet enrolled in the program and received six months of specialized training in cardiac electrophysiology at XMCH. Although the training was brief, it greatly benefited Dr. Viet. After six months, he returned to Thanh Hoa Province General Hospital in Vietnam, bringing back advanced interventional treatment concepts and techniques learned in China, quietly planting the seeds of Sino-Vietnamese hospital cardiovascular academic exchange and cooperation.

Dr. Viet shared his experiences and knowledge gained at XMCH with his Vietnamese colleagues and actively promoted exchanges between hospitals and doctors of both countries. In early December, Dr. Viet returned to XMCH for further discussions with his mentors and colleagues, as well as with the Heart Sapling visiting scholars. He reported on the work he had started back in Vietnam and his future plans, leading to the online meeting and exchange between the hospitals.

Under the framework of the Global Development Initiative, with more and more Heart Sapling visiting scholars coming to China for training, XMCH will continue to cultivate and send international cardiovascular professionals, building bridges for healthcare exchanges and cooperation among countries. We look forward to the future growth of the Heart Sapling Visiting Scholar Program, flourishing into a forest of expertise.
