Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital, Xiamen University Phase II Project Officially Commences Construction
08 January,2024
On the morning of January 7, 2024, the Phase II project of the Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital, Xiamen University (National Cardiovascular Medicine Research Sub-center Project) officially began construction. The project, with a total construction area of 85,600 square meters and planned for 300 beds, is expected to be operational in 2026. It aims to be a modern, international medical center integrating cardiac rehabilitation, health management, international medical services, scientific research, and industrial innovation.
In 2019, the hospital was relocated to Wuyuan Bay. After over four years of development, it has become a regional center for diagnosing and treating complex and critical cardiovascular diseases. For four consecutive years, its Case Mix Index (CMI), representing the technical difficulty of treated cases and the hospital's ability to handle severe and complex diseases, has ranked second nationally among other specialized (surgical) departments. The patient satisfaction rate has been among the top of all public hospitals above the secondary level in the province for many years, ranking first in 2021 and second in 2023. Currently, over 70% of the patients come from outside Xiamen, with an increasing number from Southeast Asian countries.
With the hospital's development, the existing medical and research facilities are nearing capacity. With strong support from the municipal government, XMCH initiated the construction of the Phase II project.
Focusing on Creating an International Medical Center It is understood that XMCH Phase II is a key livelihood project of Xiamen City. Located within the Wuyuan Medical Park, adjacent to the Wuyuan Bay Wetland Park, it is an important project for XMCH to establish itself as a world-class, high-level cardiovascular specialty hospital based on the "National Dual Center" development strategy.
The project will add 300 beds specializing in cardiac rehabilitation, heart transplantation, and heart failure treatment, continuously expanding high-quality medical resources. It aims to optimize sub-specialty settings in the hospital to better meet public medical needs. It will also focus on creating an international medical center, leveraging Xiamen's geographical advantages to serve Southeast Asia and countries involved in BRICS and the Belt and Road Initiative. Services will include international medical care, health check-ups, teleconsultation, remote imaging diagnostics, and remote medical education.
Accelerating the "Going Global" of Domestic Innovative Technologies and Equipment
In recent years, XMCH has seized the BRICS opportunity and actively responded to the Belt and Road Initiative. With its rich clinical resources, strong research platform, and robust technical strength, XMCH has established international cooperation platforms like the BRICS Cardiovascular Health Innovation Center. It has also launched the "Heart Sapling Visiting Scholar Program" to train cardiovascular specialists for BRICS and Belt and Road countries. To accelerate innovation-led development and international medical talent training, the Phase II project includes plans for a research and innovation building, a cardiovascular big data center, and an international medical exchange center, promoting the global reach of domestically developed innovative technologies and equipment.
Creating a "Multi-dimensional Garden-Style Hospital"
As introduced, XMCH Phase II project is just across the road from the current site and will be connected via an underground passage. The overall design of the project makes full use of the terrain, integrating the hospital into the Wuyuan Bay garden landscape, creating a "multi-dimensional garden-style hospital"
