"Heart Sapling Visiting Scholar Program"Welcomes Its First Batch of International Scholars

July 11th, the "Heart Sapling Visiting Scholar Program", a cardiovascular specialist training initiative launched by Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital, Xiamen University (XMCH), welcomed its first two international scholars. They will undergo a six-month specialized cardiovascular training at XMCH.

The scholars, both hailing from El Salvador, consist of a cardiac surgeon and an ultrasound physician, both appointed by the Ministry of Health of their country. On July 13th, after a brief period of rest, the two scholars officially began their clinical studies.

Following the morning departmental handover and ward rounds, cardiac surgery scholar Elenilson Mejia observed heart transplant surgery and an emergency surgical procedure for type A aortic dissection with the cardiac surgery team at XMCH. Ultrasound scholar Ricardo Menjivar, on the other hand, observed a complex MitraClip procedure with the cardiology and ultrasound teams.

Elenilson Mejia said, "This hospital boasts an exceptional team and world-class technology and facilities. On the first day, we were exposed to several leading-edge surgeries. We are even more eager for the learning that lies ahead, and we hope to bring these experiences back to our country to tackle more complex surgeries in the future."

The Heart Sapling Visiting Scholar Program, initiated by XMCH, invites foreign cardiovascular specialists for training in China and sends Chinese experts abroad for guidance. It facilitates exchange and cooperation with BRICS countries, and the Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative countries. The program aims to cultivate top-tier cardiovascular professionals and improve global cardiovascular health through bilateral assistance.

The Heart Sapling Visiting Scholar Program was formally unveiled at a promotional event at the United Nations in April of this year, by the Global Development Promotion Center of CIDCA (China International Development Cooperation Agency). Since its announcement, the program has attracted applications from cardiovascular specialists from countries such as Russia, India, Brazil, Vietnam, and the Philippines. 

A total of 15 to 20 visiting scholars are expected to join the "Heart Sapling Visiting Scholar Program" at Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital each year.
