Internationally Renowned Cardiology Expert Appointed as Honorary Professor at XMCH

June 8, renowned cardiologist Professor Maurizio Taramasso visited Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital Xiamen University (XMCH) and was appointed as an honorary professor of the hospital and a training mentor for the "Heart Sapling" Visiting Scholar Program. Professor Maurizio Taramasso is affiliated with Heart Center Hirslanden Zurich in Switzerland, leading the world in the application of trans-catheter intervention technology for the treatment of mitral and tricuspid valve-related diseases. He has taken part in several important clinical trials in the field of structural heart disease and has abundant surgical experience.

Accompanied by President Wang Yan, he visited the hospital, observed surgeries, and held discussions about difficult and complex cases with medical staff. Upon hearing that XMCH had recently achieved recognition as one of China’s inaugural groups of twelve cardiac valve intervention centers, and had been making many pioneering strides in interventional treatment of heart valve disease, as well as in the research and development of medical devices, Professor Taramasso expressed his deep admiration and high praise. He also expressed anticipation for potential collaborative opportunities in the future.

 The "Heart Sapling" program is initiated by XMCH, as a cardiovascular specialist training project for countries in the BRICS and the "Friends of the Global Development Initiative" group. The project combines the recruitment of foreign cardiovascular specialists for training in China and the dispatch of Chinese experts to teach abroad for mutual aid. It aims to train excellent talent for the improvement of cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment capabilities and promote the global cardiovascular health level. The project will recruit 15-20 foreign young doctors for specialist training in China this year. So far, it has received over ten CVs from visiting scholars from countries such as Brazil, India, Russia, Thailand, El Salvador, and Vietnam. The first two visiting scholars are expected to arrive in Xiamen in July.
